The Uniform Relocation Act

The federal Uniform Relocation Act is designed to compensate individuals and businesses for expenses associated with the relocation and re-establishment of a home or business after a taking. The Act directs the government to provide certain benefits and services to parties who have been forced to sell their real property as a result of a condemnation proceeding, in order to ease the transition to a new location.

In 2007, the Illinois legislature made the federal Uniform Relocation Act binding on condemning bodies in most circumstances.
